Define your goals and get organized – What are your goals as an artist? Do you hope and dream to one day have your artwork displayed in a museum or do you just want to sell enough of your art to make a good living? Defining your goals is an important first step toward your success as an artist. Realize your long-term goal and then set reasonable and attainable short-term goals.

Build your confidence – You need to believe in yourself and your artwork. If not, your marketing efforts will be less effective as the fear of rejection will hold you back. You have to learn to take risks. No one is going to come knocking at your studio door. Get out there and meet new people, network with other artists, open a booth at an art show, etc.

Get in a business mentality If you want to be successful with your art business, then you will have to learn how to juggle more than one task. This means learning how to become successful as a businessperson. The artists that are most successful have learned how to enjoy both creating and marketing their art.

Art fairs Art fairs open up great doors of opportunity for artists. They enable artists to market directly to the public without the need of an agent. The public loves art fairs. They usually come to these art fairs with the intention to purchase something, which creates more opportunity for an artist to make a sale and get recognized. You can find a wealth of information about art fairs online. One such place is http://www.sunshineartist.com/. Sunshine Artist is a great magazine that provides detailed information about art fairs and festivals. Check it out!

Follow up You must get into the habit of following up with anyone who has shown interest or has appreciated your art. That person who saw your painting in the doctors office, or the person who took your business card at your last art show are leads who can possibly turn into paying customers. They may also be able to help you in other ways you never thought possible. Its important therefore to keep in touch with everyone. Create a mailing list and ask your contacts if they would like to be added. You can send out mailers whenever you create a new piece, or to notify your contacts of upcoming exhibits or art fairs you will be attending.

Customer service You must go above and beyond your customers expectations if you want to set yourself apart from the competition. Make sure you treat your customers and leads with the utmost professionalism. Answer all inquiries promptly. Send out thank you notes and instructions for preserving and caring for the art with all of your orders. Customer service is important to all businesses, and your art business should be no exception.

Artist agents – You are your own best agent. No one knows your art better then you, and no one can express yourself and your art better than you can. An agent generally deals with more than one artist at a time so their focus is not on you and your art alone. Agents usually charge a lot of money as well. By the time its all said and done, the artist doesnt make very much on the sale. Its better to learn the ropes yourself and learn how to reach your buyers directly.

Get your own unique website – The Internet has become a huge platform for selling goods and services. More and more people are going online then ever before and artists are taking advantage of this amazing opportunity. If you want to expand your business and reach more people on a worldwide scale, you should definitely consider getting your own website. You can market and sell your artwork directly online with your own website. Your website is also a great way to organize and showcase your art to interested galleries and the people you meet in public.

Writing a free ebook is a great way to sell more affiliate products. The ebook can work for you in two different ways and I encourage you to use both methods in each free ebook you write.

The first way is to promote affiliate links directly in your ebook where appropriate. You can casually mention a product in the body of a particular chapter, review a product as part of your ebook, or add an Additional Resources section to the end of the book.

The second way is to link to your content site from your ebook. You can offer additional information on the site or link to a review page. By sending your readers to your website you get the chance to expose them to additional affiliate products and have the opportunity to get them on your newsletter list.

Lets take a look at how you can get started on your first ebook. Find a topic that you are fairly knowledgeable about and come up with an overall theme for the book. What are people looking for on the particular topic? For example, parents of infants will be interested in tips and strategies to get their baby to sleep through the night. A mom looking for a work at home job may be interested in how to spot a work at home scam and where to look for legitimate jobs.

Come up with an outline, or group some related articles you have written on a particular topic. Now all you have to do is flesh it out a little bit and of course incorporate your affiliate links. An ebook typically consists of at least 25 pages. That may sound like a lot, but you should keep your font size fairly large to make it easier to read on a computer screen.

Lets talk about format for a moment. You can purchase software to create an ebook, or you can make it a PDF document. PDF documents will work on just about any computer and people are comfortable downloading them. I usually write my ebooks in Microsoft Word, format it in there, add any pictures or graphics and then turn it into a PFD. You can either do this with Microsoft Acrobat, or use one of the free PDF creation services on the web.

Your next step will be to get the ebook circulating. After all you are not going to make any affiliate sales if no one reads your book. You can offer it as a free download on your site or give it away as a bonus for subscribing to your newsletter. I also like to add a note in the footer of each page that the reader is welcome to pass the book along to others who might be interested in the topic.

Offer the ebook as a free giveaway to other website owners and post it on the free ebook directories. Then sit back and watch the book do the work for you. After a few weeks you should see the affiliate sales come in. Time to move on to another book.

You have a book sale next week or a new product to introduce. But with a limited budget you cannot decide what marketing strategy to use. You need not worry anymore because you can get the news out quickly by creating flyers. Flyers are among the easiest to produce, least expensive and effective marketing materials today. You can hand them out, mail them or leave them in a bulletin board or any place where your target customers hang out most.

So lets say you have decided to create flyers to promote your book sale. How can you possible make them interesting and catchy?

Choose the right colors. Colors play a big part in flyer printing. The colors that you will use can send different feelings to your prospects. It can influence them in deciding whether to go to your book sale or not. Simply put it can make or break your sale.

Use images or photographs. Images have been effective in attracting the attention of prospects. You can use photos of yourself or any image that suits your purpose. This can create name recognition and a feeling of trust to your prospects. Likewise, it can express ideas and feelings that words cant.

Be simple. Create designs that are simple. Do not use different typefaces to reduce visual confusion and to be able to effectively communicate your message. Keep in mind that good flyers dont have to be complicated. Oftentimes, a simple design is far able to make a sale than those flyers with bold, complex designs.

Create a good headline. Understand that your flyer is not a business card. You need not make your business name as your headline. Instead, create a headline that speaks of your products and services. Present your prospects with headlines that address their needs a headline they cant ignore. So instead of using Larrys Bookstore try using Get best-selling novels of celebrated authors for half the price you would pay elsewhere or Great book selection at affordable prices.

Dont leave the backside empty. The printing expense in flyer advertising is just a small part in the overall expense. It is in the distribution that most expense comes in, both in terms of time and money. That is why if you are going to distribute flyers you might as well consider handing out a two-sided flyer for a better chance of making a sale.

So remember, making an effective flyer can cost you only a couple of dollars compared to the money that it can make for you. So make an effort to make your flyer a successful marketing tool.

As you walk by a bookstore faade, you can see a lot of things. Some are worthy of your stare but some are worthy of your time. Between the two, dwell on the latter. They can make you better.

Look around. Does it have your most wanted books? Does it have your favorite novelist?s paperbacks? Does it have catchy and priceless posters? Isn?t it beautiful to stare and reckon how these precious things build foundation, character and wisdom? Yes, these things have somehow contributed to your becoming YOU.

Let’s take posters as an example. When I was still a baby (as supported by the photos taken), I am surrounded by playful, informative and colorful. These posters include the alphabet, cartoons, numbers, animals and the likes. My mom’s habit of having them around continues until I became a teen. From then, I noticed that I have adopted the same scheme. I keep on placing posters to continue being updated, to keep me reminded and to be inspired and entertained. Those reminders and fact have been made part and parcel of who I am today. You may take for granted materials like posters but they do have a large-scale impact to all of us.

Posters have many faces. And that faces can yield different emotions. It can make you laugh with grace. It can turn your laugh into tears. Or pinch your heart in sorrow. It can make you sigh in relief or grimace in dismay. It can inspire you to do something hard and unusual. Nevertheless, it can calm your shattered mind and soul.

Poster is everywhere. And in every piece of it is a multi-functional mentor. They are not just a piece of crap hanging around your room. In fact, they are so priceless that they can move people to action. In connection to the marketing world, poster is one of the effective marketing tools for movies, events, products and services. With a short span of time, posters can make a great percentage of populace informed and updated. That?s how powerful poster can be. It can drive just anybody to watch a show, make a purchase or subscribe to a service.

Moreover, poster printing must be quality and free from any flaw. To ensure this, poster manufacturers must choose expert and reliable printers. The outcome of your masterpieces depends on the printers. The choice is critical. Thus, be cautious in choosing…

Need to advertise your products? Want to communicate your latest services? Businesses often look for ways to advertise their product in the most inexpensive means. Booklet printing is one of the answers to the high cost of brochure printing. Full color booklets are great for pamphlets, product booklets, annual reports, sales catalogs and consumer catalogs among others.

There is no doubt that color adds life to any printed material. It enhances its appearance, thus, making it an effective means of communication. A well chosen color for your booklet can mean the difference between a stirring material and a lousy piece of paper. Remember that your goal is to attract as many customers as possible and the right choice of color can help you do the job. Every time a customer takes hold of your booklet, it brings profit to your business and at the same time promotes your product to a larger audience.

Experts have said that full color increases name recognition and readership compared to black and white prints. The four colors namely cyan, magenta, yellow and black used in color printing creates many color shades that produce attractive print outs. When you use full color printing you may be able to achieve color consistency. The computer controlled inking and chemical mixing technique maintains consistent quality making full color printing the choice of most businesses. Keep in mind though that the more inks you use, the more expensive it is. So before you get a print job done, it is always a good idea to talk to your printer first. They can help you decide how many colors and which one to use in your print job to accomplish your goals.

Color printing can be very inexpensive especially if you use a standard weigh and color paper. Most printers today also have machines that can produce print jobs at faster turnaround time and lower prices. Remember also that the more you print, the lower the cost. So consider bulk buying if you need a lot of copies of your booklets to reduce the printing cost.

Nonetheless, the possibilities that your booklet can give your business are endless. Thus, designing it effectively can help boost your business and increase cash inflows. Whatever your choice of colors and design, with careful planning you will be able to make the most out of your budget.

1. Answering Machine – This one is easy for offline marketing, just be sure to include your URL, dot.com in your answering machine messages!

2. Address Labels – Again easy all your outgoing mail for everything use your address labels for more offline marketing of your business and website!

3. Business Cards Definitely use them, get in the habit of carrying them with you and pass them out It Works, you can even get you cards done on cd-roms!

4. Company vehicles – We all see vehicles with company names and telephone numbers on them driving our streets and motorways. This is a great idea as it gives potential customers the chance while out and about to learn about the company and also learn about how to contact them should they need the service or product they offer at some stage in the future. I often wonder why more websites aren’t promoted in this way by simply adding the company website URL also, you definitely should do this as part of your Offline Marketing!

5. Flyers Post flyers on free local bulletin boards (grocery stores, discount chain stores, shopping malls, laundromats, dry cleaners, etc.) print a flyer on bright yellow paper detailing your web address and your company. BE SURE to include your email address, URL as well as your telephone number! Tack the flyer to bulletin boards all over your town. Keep a supply in your car for handy offline marketing!

6. Freebies & Giveaways – This method is a personal favorite of mine. It involves purchasing and distributing items such as pencils, pens, t-shirts, mugs, mouse pads, calendars, key-chains, bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets and the like. All these items will have your URL, Logo, or Email address located somewhere on them helping to market offline and attract people to your website.

7. Christmas Cards Use your Christmas cards to all your customers also for offline marketing with all your info URL, email and phone numbers!

8. Checks & Coupons Again use all your information when using coupons and have your company checks printed with this information!

9. Web decals – are a new, inexpensive and fun way to use offline marketing and attract attention to your website. People absolutely love them, and they are very simple to use. Web decals are made of high quality vinyl and printed with state of the art digital equipment. Display your website address and more in bold white or black & white letters. People stick them everywhere. In your car windows, store, office and home windows, any place with glass!

10. Word of Mouth – easiest and a very viral form of offline marketing, your happy customers and friends just pass it on!

11. Fax cover sheets – (many people forget this one for offline marketing!)

12. Personal brochures – about you and your company!

13. Printed Material – Print your URL (Web site address) everywhere you print your business name. Including business cards, fliers, signage, ads, product tags, labels, craft show directories (in shows you may be attending) and anywhere else your business name is printed!

14. Newspapers, classifieds and related magazines – The print media which includes newspapers, journals and magazines is another avenue where your can have your URL exposed for everyone to see. It’s best first to start advertising your products, services and URL in local newspapers and then if successful continue onto regional and national publications. If you can’t afford the common graphical advertisement as seen throughout newspapers and journals related to your industry don’t worry as most of these publications have classified ad sections. Classified ads allow you to reach a targeted audience very cheaply with a simple short message and of course your URL is included in there somewhere too again a great source of offline marketing for your business!

15. Press releases – Press releases using them for offline marketing and promotion. Press releases or news releases as they’re sometimes known are newsworthy stories about your business that you send to various sections of the media. These sections of the media must be related to your industry for you to have any chance of success. Newsworthy stories are stories which readers of the media publications you submit to might be interested in.

If the journalist reads it and likes it he or she may publish it or some of its contents in his or her publication, if this happens you’re on to a winner because the public in general are much more responsive to a news story than a plain old hyped up advertisement. This could mean they’ll enquire about or even purchase your products or services.

Using press releases for offline marketing of your website uses the same principals, if it’s newsworthy release it. Newsworthy events for websites include website launches, website re launches and new online services among other items. Also dont forget online press releases!

16. I. ID-It Plates – These Elegant mini-Billboards promote YOU 365 days a year, enhance the appearance of your vehicles, last for years and most important, give you literally Millions of Impressions and affordable offline marketing over their lifetime.

Conclusion – Even if your business only exits in the virtual world you must realize ALL your customers live and always will live in the physical world and therefore can be reached much better from the physical world. The moral of the story is never ever forget about the offline marketing and promotion of your website. Your success or failure could depend on it!

Here are 10 misconceptions by companies about entering overseas markets.
1 If we make a better mousetrap, they will buy it.
The question here is, do you think that factor alone is the necessary and sufficient condition to sell overseas? If it was always about quality, then why doesn’t everyone always buy the best product?
2 English is the universal language, so we can simply sell in English.
This speaks to several issues: Does everyone in the client organization speak, read and write English? Remember, decisions often are made on a consensus basis, and your marketing materials may travel quite a bit within the clients’ firms and sit on many desks.
3 Our labor cost is too high to market our product overseas.
This myth can be refuted with one statistic: Fifty-five percent of Japan’s trade surplus with the United States comes from industries where their labor cost is higher than ours. If labor cost was the deciding factor, then how on earth could Germany possibly sell anything abroad?

4 Our price is too high for overseas markets.
Are you intending to compete only on price? Many commodities (oil, wheat, cement, corn) are price-sensitive, but the vast majority of international successes aren’t.
5 Our skilled marketers can take on overseas markets.
If we define marketing as awareness, understanding and belief, we need to ask:
Do my marketing people know how to make overseas markets aware of the product? Do they know how to explain the products, attributes and benefits in terms that make sense to the locals?

6 Our in-house foreign nationals can sell to overseas markets.
In one example, a U.S.-based CEO told me his Chinese wife could negotiate with the Chinese government for market entry. My questions were: Is she a skilled negotiator? Does she understand the sales process? Does she have the motivation and energy to break into this difficult market?
7 Our local partners will handle all of the marketing.
This idea of relinquishing market control while enjoying great success is rare. Most of the time, overseas partners will look toward the parent to help stimulate demand, deal with problems as they occur, get to know the distribution channels, offer subject matter expertise and show that the parent company has indeed invested in the market.

8 The customer expressed all of the buying signs, and even said “yes” to our proposal.
Many firms overseas conduct their market research by posing as buyers. They conduct competitive intelligence the same way. Your banker will tell you that the sale is complete only when the money has been deposited into the bank.
9 We don’t need to invest a lot; our Web site gives us a presence.
Actually, your Web site gives you a brochure, but no real place where businesses and consumers can get support, touch and feel your product, get to know your company and its staff, deal with returns, make product modifications and enable co-marketing agreements.
10 If it worked here (in the United States), it will work there.
This speaks to local ethnocentrism. Success at home also can be a hindrance to overseas success. Arrogance and impatience are often byproducts of domestic success. Market conditions, buying conditions, business practices, negotiation tactics and product specifications all differ by market.
So, how do you choose a market?
With hundreds of variables to deal with, there is finally help. The Market Access Toolkit will help. The Market access toolkit is a collection of articles, spreadsheets, screening mechanisms, white papers, booklets and audio products, complied by experts in international market entry.
It contains episodes from our radio show: how to lose your shirt abroad.
And with a money back guarantee, what do you have to lose?
Use the market access toolkit to analyze and choose the correct market, and the correct way to enter it.

Product naming is a key aspect of branding. The name you ultimately choose will reflect who you are, your companys personality and vision. But more importantly, it must unforgettably embody the promise of your products main benefit to your potential customers. It can dovetail generically with your competition, but ideally, it should stand out from the crowd. Where to begin? Here are some basic guidelines.

If the fields too crowded, be unique

MSN Search, Netscape Search, AOL Search, they all stayed in the same category, so you could play it safe and go with Stupendous Search or Super-Duper Search. This works for a time, but as soon as the field gets too crowded, youll be lost in the mush of sameness with ever diminishing name recognition. If youre in it for the long haul, better to break away from the crowd with a name like Google, Yahoo, or even Dogpile (though Im not a fan of going into the scat category just to be unique). Even Kinkosthe founder’s nickname (he had kinky red hair in school)is different enough to be memorable.

Avoid tongue twisters

Theres a little part in all of us that hates to be embarrassed. When we ask for a product or talk about it with friends, we want to sound literate and not fumble over pronunciations. So be kind to your potential customers and avoid tongue twisters, or any name thats unusually long or foreign sounding. If you cant find a single-word name, dont go over two or three syllables.

Alliteration can help with longer names

Okay, so the president of the company likes all the longer names on your list. You can make them more memorable and/or easier to pronounce by using alliteration. Consider Circuit City (originally, the incredibly bland, monosyllabic, Wards). Or Downtown Disney, Or the most famous brand in the world, Coca Cola. All four syllables, yet they roll off the tongue with surprising ease.

Avoid abbreviations

Abbreviations lack personality and communicate very little in terms of benefit or brand character. Sure, IBM, MCI and ABC have big recognition and identity, but they also spent years and millions in virtually all media to promote their imageusing images of people and situations that were warm and fuzzy. Even billionaire Bill Gates chose Microsoft over MS (which has some undesirable connotations).

Convey an implied benefit

If you dont have a lot of media dollars to spend on name recognition, try for a name that conveys a benefit or describes content. Snapple started out with a name that combined two of its original flavors: Spice N Apple. Silkthe soy-based milk brandcombines soy and milk. Benefit-oriented names include EasyOff oven cleaner, Miracle-Grow plant food, and Hearthwarmer (a fireplace insert).

Lost in Translationor worse!

Most of us have heard the story of Chevrolet introducing their “Nova” in Spanish-speaking countries. The car tanked because ‘nova’ means “doesn’t go.” Fiat found they had to rename their “uno” in Finland, since “Uno” means garbage in Finnish. Canadian products require labeling in both English and French, which is why on some cookie boxes, the English phrase “without preservatives” has been unintentionally translated into the French “sans preservatives,” which means “without condoms.” Nuff said.

Shun fads

The shelf life of a faddish name is short and sweet. It rises to the stratosphere of recognition then nosedives into obscurity faster than you can say, radical, tubular or outta sight. Another problem with fads is theyre often limited to one demographic or clique. In a market as broad and diverse as the U.S., its better to be safe than sorry.

Protect your image

If youre like most companies, you worked hard and spent some real money creating the image of your company. So it only makes sense to protect your investment with a product name thats consistent with your existing brands and image. Rolls Royce had to pull the name of its newest addition to the Silver Cloud line, which they tentatively named the “Silver Mist,” since in German, “mist” means manure. So build on what you have. A good example: Googles entry into online shopping with Froogle. Incidentally, if youre wondering where Google came from, its a variation on the math term googol, a huge number with endless zeros.

Dont forget legal

Once youve settled on a few ideal prospective names, hire a good lawyer to make sure theyre not already being used and not confusingly similar to someone elses in your industry.

Hopefully, this brief overview will help guide you through the subtleties of product naming. Remember, try to be unique and benefit oriented without being confusing or offensive. Avoid fads, abbreviations and tongue twisters. And, by all means, protect your image.
